NAPLAN, or the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy – is the standard testing system for students across Australia. The goal is to determine each student’s skills in basic reading, writing, language and numeracy skills, and it is undertaken at years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
During these years, teachers will work to ensure students are well prepared to sit these tests. They will often carry out activities and practice assessments during class time, and help students to develop the skills needed for each test area.
As well as personal teaching, NAPLAN books can be a huge help for students. They contain the key lessons and knowledge students must know, and include numerous examples and test questions to help prepare students for the final exams.

Excel NAPLAN-style Tests is a great all-rounder for Year 3 students entering their first year of NAPLAN testing. Even if your child’s teacher doesn’t assign it as coursework for the year, it’s a great addition to anything your child is studying in class to reinforce lessons and prepare for the exams.
In later years, the topics get more in depth. At this stage, NAPLAN books often separate out to focus on a single subject area. For example, the Excel NAPLAN-style Numeracy Test textbook is designed for students in Year 9, and includes no fewer than 32 mini numeracy tests and three sample numeracy tests. It also contains answers and worked solutions for each one, giving the student a good standard to work towards.
