TERMS OF BUSINESS (updated 17/05/2024)

All prices are listed in Australian Dollars

I agree that I am purchasing the Goods for my own personal or business use and will not on-sell the Goods unless otherwise agreed in writing by Booktopia.

Booktopia Pty Ltd ("Booktopia") is an online bookstore and our primary means of communication with you is by your email address listed on your Booktopia account. Booktopia will not be held responsible for any missed communication due to the email address being incorrect. If you have more than one email address, please check all email accounts before contacting Booktopia.


Your order is an offer to buy the item(s) in your order. When you place an order with Booktopia, you will receive an order confirmation confirming receipt and the details of your order. The order confirmation acknowledges we have received your order rather than an acceptance of your order.

Orders of multiple copies of items are subject to availability. Booktopia's website displays an item where at least one item is available but not necessarily more.

Booktopia reviews all orders including orders for multiple copies to determine if the amount in stock or available from a supplier is capable of meeting that order. Where the quantity ordered exceeds that held in stock or with a supplier, Booktopia will contact you to advise if the order can be fulfilled and, if so, over what timeframe.

Booktopia is not obligated to sell a title at the listed price if we are not able to source it from our supplier at the time of ordering as availability may have changed in the interim.

Your order is only accepted and the contract formed when we dispatch the item(s) to you and send a dispatch confirmation. If your item(s) is dispatched in more than one package, you will receive separate dispatch confirmations in each package and each dispatch confirmation will be a separate contract.


All prices are listed in Australian dollars and are inclusive of GST. Booktopia uses a dynamic pricing model, and as such prices may change. The price payable is the price displayed on the Website at the time of purchase.

If placing an order from outside Australia you will be charged in your own currency at the conversion rate of your credit card company.

All prices on the Booktopia website are for orders placed through the website or by phone.

We reserve the right to correct any pricing errors and we may cancel orders and refund your money because of genuine pricing errors (either because of unilateral mistake, or for any reason) up to the time you receive the goods.


In the first instance, if you have an issue with your order then please contact Booktopia Customer Care as soon as possible.

Changes to orders, including cancelling because of an error or for a change of mind, are possible only for a limited time before your order begins processing in our Distribution Centre for In Stock items, or begins processing at our supplier for all other items.

If you want to change your order, you will need to advise us as soon as possible in order for us to determine whether your order has been processed. Once your order has been processed it is not possible to change that order. Note we are unable to combine multiple orders.

Any addition or substitution may cause a change in the shipping time frame for that order so please be aware of the advised shipping time for added or substituted items.

In Stock items are marked with the ‘In Stock’ symbol on the product’s listing on the Booktopia website, whilst other products will advise a shipping time frame allowing for our supplier to fulfil the product to us.

Other than for defective items a refund is only possible if we have confirmed that your change or cancellation was able to be processed. We may offer a store credit for a cancellation accepted outside of these terms.

You may cancel an order if unshipped within 120 days provided that is not in transit from a supplier.

We reserve the right to cancel and refund your order where more than 120 days have passed and we are unable to source the title(s).


This policy does not limit the rights you are entitled to under Australian Consumer Law.

Returns for defective items

If there is a problem with any of the items received for your order then the Booktopia Customer Care team is available to help you.

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

If you have received an item that is incorrect, damaged or faulty please contact us as soon as possible from the time the delivery was made. Booktopia will require evidence of the issue and may require you to return the item for assessment.

Booktopia may provide means to return an item at no cost to you or an alternate remedy. If an item is required to be returned (at no cost) it must be packed securely with cardboard or bubble wrap protecting the item, packed to prevent movement inside the package and ensuring the package is firmly enclosed.

Returns for change of mind

Before returning anything you must contact Booktopia Customer Care.

Booktopia is not obligated to accept a return for a change of mind. If we do accept a change of mind return then you must pay return postage and will only be entitled to a store credit, excluding the cost of shipping, for the approved returned item.

All returns must be packed securely with cardboard or bubble wrap protecting the item, packed to prevent movement inside the package and ensuring the package is firmly enclosed.

Returned items for a change of mind must be received at Booktopia in new and re-saleable condition (except where a damaged item has been accepted for return).

Where an item is returned for a change of mind without Booktopia’s approval, or has not been packed securely, or is not in a new or re-saleable condition when it arrives at Booktopia’s Distribution Centre, Booktopia is not obligated to provide a refund or store credit and the item may be returned to you. We will contact you to advise of the return status.

Store credits and refunds for an approved change of mind return will only apply to the item returned and will not cover any return postage costs or your original shipping charge.

A return and refund for a change of mind is not possible for the following product types:


Booktopia acts as a Licensee (or Agent) of the Publisher to provide the Digital Content to the Customer. When purchasing Digital Content the Customer acquires a license to access the Digital Content as provided to Booktopia and the Customer by the Publisher.

Once a Customer accesses or downloads any Digital Content that they purchase, they no longer have the right to cancel their purchase of that Digital Content.

Booktopia’s obligations to the Customer with regards to supply of the Digital Content is fulfilled when the Digital Content is downloaded. It is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage Digital Content once downloaded.

If you experience any difficulty accessing or using the digital content, or a technical issue, then please contact Booktopia Customer Care as soon as possible for assistance. In the event that the Digital Content is defective or faulty the Customer is entitled to a refund.

Booktopia and the Publishers of Digital Content reserve the right to change, suspend, remove or disable access to any Digital Content, products, or other materials comprising a part of a digital service at any time, in good faith, with reasonable prior notice. If the change to the Digital Content materially reduces your rights, you may be entitled to a pro rata refund based on the extent of the reduction of your rights.

The Publishers may at any time withdraw or remove Digital Content and make no guarantees that Digital Content will continue to be made available for access. In this circumstance, Booktopia will take reasonable endeavours to notify Customers prior to the withdrawal or removal of that Digital Content.

Content may not be available for re-download if that Content is no longer offered on our Services. If the Customer has purchased but has not yet downloaded the Digital Content that is no longer offered on our Services, Booktopia will refund the Customer for that Content within the 30 days from the date when that Content was removed from our Services.

The Publisher of the Digital Content is solely responsible for the Digital Content and any claims or warranties relating to it.

Terms of Use of Digital Content:

  1. Digital Content may not be copied, shared or otherwise distributed.
  2. Content is available for personal use only.
  3. Restrictions on downloads to Customer devices accessing the Digital Content may apply.
  4. Applicable use is within relevant Laws.

Booktopia and the Publisher of the Digital Content reserve the right to enforce applicable Terms of Use relating to the Digital Content.

In Stock at the Booktopia Warehouse
There will be an 'in stock' and ‘Aims to Ship’ on the product information page of the individual title indicating if the title is in stock and the estimated amount of business days ('Days') required to ship from our warehouse ('Ship').

Occasionally stock runs out before the website is updated and you will be notified if you have been affected. Dispatch times for 'in stock' items can be delayed due to; increased volume of orders; warehouse disruptions; and for other matters beyond our control.

Items Not In Stock at the Booktopia Warehouse
Items that are NOT in stock at the Booktopia Warehouse will need to be ordered from the supplier.

The title you are seeking may have to be ordered from an Australian or overseas supplier. Each item you order may have different delivery expectations depending on availability.

To offer the widest range of items online we rely on information provided by the publishers and distributors. Our website is updated daily but titles can and do sometimes become temporarily unavailable whilst reprinting, or they may go out of print without prior notice from the publisher. If an item in your order is affected you will be notified of the delay.

Shipping Expectations

  1. eBooks and Gift Certificates are delivered instantly.
  2. All items are intended to be shipped by the time listed on the product information page.
  3. Specialist titles that can be sourced by Booktopia may take additional time to ship to you as they are not titles that suppliers keep readily available and need to be specifically ordered in. e.g academic texts, older hardcover editions, or titles on very specific subjects.
  4. Extremely specialised titles (i.e. indent titles) or titles waiting for a reprint can take 6 weeks to 4 months to source from suppliers around the world. Indent titles cannot be cancelled or returned for a change of mind (except where the item is defective in accordance with the Returns Policy).
  5. Some titles are yet to be published so pay attention to the publisher's predicted publish date when ordering.

In all instances we will notify you of shipping times for each title with the information we have at the time of processing your order as discussed above. Please also add the appropriate number of days it may take for Australia Post for Australian orders or the usual postage time for international orders to deliver to you from Sydney NSW.

If items are not readily available then we will endeavour to contact you to discuss the time frame for these items.

Once your order has been shipped, an automated email will be sent confirming dispatch from our warehouse.


*** Address changes and/or corrections made through your Booktopia Account will only affect future orders placed after the changes and/or corrections are made. Any changes and/or corrections for current orders must be done by contacting the Booktopia Customer Care Team as soon as possible.***

Customers who enter addresses that Australia Post have deemed having incorrect and/or insufficient details to ensure delivery may result in the following:

If Booktopia has incorrectly addressed a package then Booktopia will be responsible for the resending, replacement or refund of the items not delivered or delayed, including any further cost of packaging and delivery.

Where you have provided any incorrect and/or insufficient information that results in the package being returned then your order may be cancelled and a store credit will be issued.

Booktopia will not be liable for any shipment that is materially delayed or lost and is found to have had incorrect and/or insufficient details provided by you.

If the package has the correct delivery information and is 'lost' by Australia Post, Booktopia will replace the items (at Booktopia’s cost) or issue a store credit if the timing of the shipment of the replacement copies is not acceptable to you. You will first need to have checked with your local Post Office.

If Booktopia is unable to source a replacement copy due to the title no longer being available a refund will be processed for the unavailable title.

Mail Redirections

Australia Post Redirections may not work with packages. Booktopia will not be responsible for replacing goods or extra costs if a redirection has not been successful. Please contact Customer Care before you move to ensure a current order has the updated details to minimise delays.


Where you pay by;

your order will be cancelled.

If the stock availability or prices have changed between the time of placing the order and payment being received your order may be cancelled.

Please include the Booktopia Order Number as a reference when you are paying by Bank Transfer and send a message via the message centre in your Booktopia account informing us that you have made the payment.


All purchases including eBooks and Gift Certificates are charged at checkout.

After you have placed the order and we find an Item/s is no longer available we will remove it from your processed order and you will be refunded for that item.

If any delays are discovered on a title at the time of processing, you will be notified with the options available to you.

If Booktopia is unable to charge your credit card due to insufficient funds or other errors, then Booktopia will attempt to contact the customer to rectify the issue. If the issue is not resolved then the order will be cancelled.

If the stock availability or prices have changed between the time of placing the order and payment being received your order may be cancelled.


Customers with more than one item may be sent their items in multiple shipments. Booktopia may hold on to items after the first item has been allocated to the order to include as many items in one shipment as possible.

Customers shipping to addresses in Australia pay a one off fee for as many shipments required per order. If you require items to be sent before the items in your order are consolidated, an additional postage charge may apply. You can request items to be sent sooner by contacting the Booktopia Customer Care Team.


All overseas orders are consolidated to one delivery

If our freight provider service does not deliver to your specified address we reserve the right to cancel your order before it is processed.

Orders over the value of AUD$900 being delivered to New Zealand may be liable for customs charges, taxes (including GST) and brokerage costs. These charges are the responsibility of the recipient and Booktopia will not reimburse customers for these import costs or provide a refund or credit for any order if a customer refuses to pay them. Please contact our Customer Care Team to discuss what arrangements may be possible for your order. Where GST is levied on the product at custom clearing, the customer should be entitled to claim a full refund of the GST on presentation of the original purchase invoice showing GST had already been incurred on the purchase.


We keep all personal information submitted in the strictest confidence and in accordance with Booktopia’s privacy policy. The information is kept on a secure server and is only used to process orders from Booktopia. This information will not be released to anyone other than necessary to complete your order. We may provide our suppliers with your personal information that is necessary to complete your order so they may deliver directly to you to improve delivery times. We require your contact information to be kept in the strictest confidence by them. We will not rent or sell your personal information to any third party outside of Booktopia without your permission.

Third-Party Service Providers: Booktopia may provide the service providers that deliver packages with your email address and/or mobile phone number ONLY to provide customers up to date delivery tracking of dispatched orders.


The information contained on the Booktopia website may contain technical inaccuracies or typographical errors. All liability of Booktopia Pty Ltd howsoever arising for inaccuracies or errors is expressly excluded to the fullest extent permitted by law.
