Quarries are often dismissed as eyesores, yet they represent one of the oldest and most vital extractive industries. The few surviving building-stone quarries employ some centuries-old methods, and the getting and handling of good-quality stone requires great care and still. This book deals with examples of four important rock types to explain the methods employed in their extraction: granite, an igneous rock; slate (metamorphic); and sandstone and limestone to represent the sedimentary freestones. Other types are mentioned, including modern roadstone quarries, now major features of the landscape. About the author Peter Stanier was born and educated in Cornwall where he developed an interest in the history of metal mining and stone quarrying, evidence of which is hard to escape in the county. He is a writer and lecturer in archaeology and industrial archaeology and lives at Shaftesbury in Dorset.
