This volume examines the regional and global context of the political economy of illegal narcotics operations in the Caribbean, assesses some of the political economy connections and consequences of the enterprise, and discusses some of the measures adopted to contend with the region's illegal drug challenge. Although the book's focus is on the Caribbean it also assesses the region's dynamics in global terms because global interdependence requires an appreciation of the larger context of the challenge facing the Caribbean. It probes political economy ramifications ranging from things 'strictly economic' - such as debt, structural adjustment and off-shore finance - to socio-political matters - such as crime, education and political stability. Although all the possible ramifications cannot be examined, those considered critical to the Caribbean are addressed. The work also discusses the multidimensional responses to the illegal narcotics enterprise, including education, rehabilitation, law enforcement and anti-money-laundering measures.
Industry Reviews

'a major contribution to the public discourse, both academic and non-academic, on the illegal drug trade, its world-wide ramifications, and related international development issues...the range of topics covered and the in-depth analysis of the various issues addressed therein, make this book a must not only for academics interested in these matters but most certainly for policy makers and all those engaged in the fight against illegal drugs.' - Sir Neville Nicholls, President, Caribbean Development bank, Barbados

An excellent discussion is provided about the inherent tensions and conflict in the US-Caribbean drug connection. ...The book provides an excellent overview of the problems, the political consequences, and ongoing efforts to attack the problem. Necessarily, the problems and strategies are dynamic.' - Bruce Zagaris, Berliner, Corcoran & Rowe, LLP
