Timaeus and Critias

Two of the most influential philosophical dialogues of Plato, exploring the nature of the cosmos and the legendary account of Atlantis.

In Timaeus, Plato presents a profound discussion of cosmology and natural philosophy. Through the voice of the philosopher Timaeus, the dialogue describes the creation and structure of the universe, presenting a vision of an ordered cosmos shaped by intelligence and harmonious design. Plato examines the relationship between the physical world and the realm of eternal forms, offering one of the earliest systematic accounts of the universe in Western philosophy.

The companion dialogue Critias continues the discussion by recounting the story of an ancient civilisation said to have existed beyond the Pillars of Hercules: the powerful island kingdom of Atlantis. The narrative contrasts the virtues of an idealised ancient Athens with the moral decline of Atlantis, whose destruction serves as a reflection on political order, virtue, and the fate of societies that abandon moral discipline.

Together these dialogues combine philosophical speculation with mythic narrative, illustrating Plato's distinctive method of using dialogue and allegory to explore complex ideas about nature, society, and human understanding.
