Security and Conflict Analysis aims to apply the principles, tools, and methods described generally in Book 1 (Fundamentals of Actor Analysis) to security and conflict resolution matters. The book has 9 sets of Lectures. In Lecture 1, conflict analysis is described as the deliberate study of the causes, actors, and dynamics of conflict, and a set of tools and methods for the design, implementation, and evaluation of peacebuilding initiatives. Lecture Two explains how to use conflict analysis to assess conflict sensitivity, program development, actors/stakeholders networking, and conflict resolution/transformation intervention programming. Gathering information for conflict analysis is discussed in Lecture Three. The most common methods are interviews, discussions, surveys, and desk reviews. Lectures Four, Five, Six, and Seven explain the various tools/techniques and methods used for conflict analysis. Conflict analysis can be an end in itself and part of the process of solving other problems. Lecture Eight explains factor analysis as complementary to actor analysis. Factors are interdependent elements that affect the operational environment and actors individually and in groups. Lastly, Lecture Nine applies the tools and methods of conflict analysis to the design, implementation, and monitoring of security programs/interventions for peacebuilding and conflict transformation.
