Power is a dangerous game

This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own.

One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart ...

About the Author

Victoria Aveyard was born and raised in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, a small town known only for the worst traffic rotary in the continental United States. She moved to Los Angeles to earn a BFA in screenwriting at the University of Southern California. She currently splits her time between the East and West coasts. As an author and screenwriter, she uses her career as an excuse to read too many books and watch too many movies.

Industry Reviews

"A whirlwind of betrayal and plot twists." - SCI-FI NOW

"It's slick, it's interesting and ... gripping." - SFX

'Red Queen is a clever blend of The Hunger Games, The Selection, Graceling and Divergent.' - STARBURST

Aveyard weaves a compelling new world, and Mare and the two men in her life evolve intriguingly as class tension rises. Revolution supersedes romance, setting the stage for action-packed surprises. An inventive, character-driven twist breathes new life into tired fantasy trends. - KIRKUS

'A wonderful mash up of Ancient Rome and Marie Antoinette with a dash of Catherine Fisher's Incarceron and Ridley Scott's Gladiator, not to mention some of Marvel Comic's box of tricks . . . Exciting and original. - Sam Hawksmoor, author of the Repossession Trilogy

Slow start but couldn't put it down by the end.

Coming off another series of books I thoroughly enjoyed, I found it a bit hard to get into this book. With that said, after the first 5 chapters or so I could not put the book down. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and have already recommended it to several friends. I really enjoy the layers in this book and the smart details the author builds in subtle ways.

Fantastic Read!

I whipped through this book in three days. It was absolutely divine. I have never read anything like it. Victoria is an amazing author who writes characters that aren't always perfect. The main character in Red Queen is Mare Barrows, who is as flawed as you and I. The storyline is never slow and I couldn't put it down. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves post-apocalyptic worlds and lots of twists.

Holy. Flippin. Heck. This book... is so good... It's so amazingly well written, I literally could not put it down I actually lost sleep. The pages pretty much turned themselves, it was so amazing. The last plot twist... boy. You do not see it coming, though once it happens it's kind of obvious and it leaves you like NO WAY OH MY GOD. SO GOOD.

This book is absolutely amazing and thrilling

The thrilling, action-packed novel Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard continues to be a clear favourite for many young adults including myself. The nonfiction novel takes place within a dystopian society ruled by the Silver elites who possess superpowers and marginalise the Red commoners. The life of Mare, a Red commoner from the poverty-stricken Stilts changes dramatically after discovering her deadly superpower, however, she is soon captured by the Silvers and forced to live as a long lost princess in fear of her powers. With her new advantage Mare hopes to bring the Silvers down from the inside creating an equal society for the Red community. This book was incredibly exciting filled with jaw-dropping twists and turns within the chapters, it was mysterious, it was action packed the storyline just seemed to get more and more interesting as the book continued. In addition, the book highlighted the inequality and discrimination faced by the Red commoners allowing me to relate that information to my everyday life. I would recommend Red Queen to readers who love non-fiction novels that filled with mysteries, exciting twists and turns and action scenes, I cannot wait to continue the Red Queen series which is followed by the King's Cage.

Not good

2

Derivative. A mess of all the recent YA dystopian tropes set in an unrealised world that is desperate to be fleshed out. Character motivations are sloppy and unrealistic. Very disappointing. Try something else or hope the series gets better

This book... omg, this book. The plot twist is so amazing, I was shocked! Please, if you're into "The selection", "The Hunger Games", "Divergent", any other sci-fi/fiction novels, this is 100% for you!. You know what, just buy it. I was a bit hesitant at first, watched some spoiler free reviews, bought it for the lols and here I am, raving about this fantastic book. Oh and even better, the sequels are just as amazing! Enjoy reading bookworms!

I was very intrigued to see where the story would go. Some aspects were predictable. Otherwise, it was very refreshing.

I really enjoyed this book and got bummed each night I had to force myself to put it down to sleep. I liked the story and the concept, I liked the world the author created. Once I finished this one I immediately picked up the next book in the series.

A highly engaging other world fantasy. Interesting characters and engaging story line. Right up there with Donaldson, Lewis and Martin. Bound to be loved and a favourite go to book.
