In the last few years a number of books have appeared about Transpersonal Psychology, but few have been written by those with years of experience both in life and in the study of the Transpersonal. In the 1970's Barbara Somers and Ian Gordon-Brown started a centre for transpersonal study. This came out of their lifelong work and interest in psychology in its many forms. They developed a method and a mode of teaching that was unique to them, drawing on their own personal study and their life-experiences, and they took the essence of this and distilled it into a new form of training. This book, carefully edited by Hazel Marshall, is a distillation of that training. It will be extremely useful to therapists who have been working for some years, reconnecting them with their own original point of entry into this study and also affirming and adjusting many of the ways they now work. It will also be fascinating to those just starting on the path of psychotherapy, as it will give them insights that no other book that I know of can give them. This book is easy to read, but it is not easy to forget. Sentences, paragraphs, thoughts, understandings and indeed its deep humanness will stay with you for some time; perhaps for ever.

Industry Reviews

“This is a splendid and long-awaited book. It will illuminate and inspire all who care about the profounder aspects of human psychology, and should quickly become a classic in the field. It is the kind of book that changes lives.”
Prof. David Fontana Chair of the Transpersonal Psychology Section, British Psychological Society.

“The work of Barbara Somers and Ian Gordon-Brown has been life-changing for thousands - I among them. This book is a real gift from two wise, skilled, compassionate teachers who together managed to weave together creativity, authenticity and personal power in a way that enabled all of us who worked with them to live more of our unique divine spark and grow richer in spirit as we walk the earth. It is wonderful to make so much of the richnessof their work available to so many.”
Leslie Kenton Award winning writer, television broadcaster, teacher & social activist; consultant to the EU Parliament, and a course developer for Britain’s Open University.

“The deep insights and quality of the material will make this book a ‘must’ for psychotherapists, counsellors and anyone recognising the importance of ‘soul’, and since the style is so readable, it will expand to a wider general public.”
Dr. Mary Swainson Pioneer of student counselling in the UK.

“Privileged to proof-read this work of genius from two people of the heart. I was gifted sevenfold in return, at times thrilled to the core, at others moved to tears. A ‘lay-person’ with absolutely no experience of transpersonal psychotherapy, I am only too aware of recurring negative behaviour-patterns. I was amazed to be taken thoughtfully, gently and humourously into the shadows, given the jewel-tools to understand and resolve the issues, and enabled to move on with increased awareness of relationship, of life, consciousness and the journey of the soul.”
Celia M. Gunn Writer and landscape gardener.

“Barbara Somers and the late Ian Gordon-Brown are two of the great pioneers and spiritual representatives of transpersonal psychology in Great Britain.  The high standard of their work and teachings is reflected in the quality of this book.  It skilfully integrates the personal with the Transpersonal, allowing readers insight into their childhood and the greatest challenges they face on their psycho-spiritual journeys.  If you are interested in finding a depth of understanding for your biography, your relationships, your greatest issues and obstacles, as well as your purpose in life - this book is a must read.”
Diana Whitmore  The Psychosynthesis and Education Trust

"It is clear that the psychology presented here does not try to be an end in itself but is a stepping off point for further development and practice.  No one - no psychologist, no counselling practitioner, no pained individual looking for a new understanding in life - who reads this uniquely informative book and absorbs but a little of its optimistic wisdom can ever be quite the same again."

Dr. Anthony Thorley  Writer and Addiction Psychiatrist

"Many of us have been desperately hurt and wounded in our lives. Torn between extreme opposites, we may feel ourselves to be flung and pulled in all directions, unaware that there can be a solution. Barbara Somers and Ian Gordon-Brown show how the Transpersonal seeks to clarify the healing process. It’s a natural process, like the healing of a wound."
