Adsorption of Tyros can be used in class room teaching (for both university undergraduates and graduates) and for self-study undertaken by technology practitioners interested in adsorption. The book is not intended to be a treatise on adsorption science. Rather it aims at presenting certain adsorption basics which are relevant and essential to the application of adsorption including data analysis, interpretation and design calculations. As a text book, Adsorption for Tyros is largely self-contained. it deliberately keeps to a minimum the background information necessary for its understanding and comprehension. The main topics covered include: (i) Gas adsorption equilibrium and adsorption equilibrium of liquid. Adsorption of liquid solutions, the difference between equilibrium individual solute uptake and surface excess are discussed in detail. (ii) A general discussion of adsorbate uptake mechanism and uptake rate expression is given. The various uptake steps are outlined. (ii) Two well-known adsorption performance models and their generalizations are discussed in detail. (iv) Application of the performance models for identifying adsorbate uptake and adsorption process design are discussed and demonstrated with illustrative examples. (v) Design methods based on the constant behaviour assumption and the unused bed length concept as well as empirical ones are presented.(vi) Methods of estimating adsorption equilibrium and uptake rate parameters are reviewed.

  • Includes adsorption basics and their applications
  • Discusses gas adsorption equilibrium and equilibrium of liquid adsorption
  • Gives the various steps of adsorbate uptake and their combination to yield adsorbate uptake rate expression
  • Presents both rational and empirical design for adsorption processes
  • Highlights common mistakes found in recent adsorption publications
