Agroforestry research is at the centre of developing sustainable use of natural renewable resources in the coming century and is evolving to address changing needs. Consolidation of the scientific gains now being made in process-oriented research, coupled with the development of a policy framework that encourages adoption of sustainable land use practices, are now required. It can be anticipated that agroforestry practices have an important role to play in conserving forest resources by reducing the need to deforest and, if 'forest' is defined in a broad sense as tree cover, by increasing the proportion of woody biomass in farming landscapes.
The present volume comprises a selection of papers, selected from those presented during the agroforestry sessions of the IUFRO 20th World Congress held in Tampere, Finland. These papers establish agroforestry as an interdisciplinary science focused on the practical imperative of assisting farmers, forest dwellers and landscape-level planners in achieving sustainable food, fuel and timber production into the twenty-first century.
