The Youngest Mountain Man is primarily a boy's adventure story, set in the Fur Trade Era of the 1830's. In my 34 years as an elementary teacher (BA, and MAT in Elementary Education) I was appalled at the shortage of wholesome adventure stories for boys. My book is geared toward fourth to sixth grade readers, although my grandson who is a 3rd grader read and enjoyed it Though I don't come right out and say it, readers with knowledge of the stories in the book of Judges will recognize my inspiration for the rescue attempt scene where the mountain men surround the Indians with "many little lights" created by the use of trade mirrors. I hope readers will recognize the story of Gideon and the many torches (Judges 7:21).Prophet, one of the mountain men who rescued Jacob, does not curse, and treats the Indians with respect, not killing unless in self-defense, Unlike Four-toes, his partner, who attacks Indians with a vengeance, for personal reasons. In his saddle bags Prophet carries a Bible, referred to as "the good book" in the story. He uses it at the burial of Jacob's parents. In the character, Prophet, I've tried to introduce a believable Christian male influence to my boy readers. I hope they can look up to a real man like Prophet, who is a believer.
