When Words Fail Us

How does Stan Grant's approach to language and communication in this book differ from his previous works?

Whilst Grant's earlier books such as Talking To My Country and Australia Day directly confronted issues of Indigenous identity and national reckoning, When Words Fail Us represents a more philosophical and introspective turn in his writing. The book explores the very nature of communication itself, examining moments when language becomes inadequate or burdensome, and considering the value of silence and listening as alternatives to speech. This marks a shift from addressing what needs to be said about Australia to questioning how and whether we can truly speak to one another at all.

What philosophical traditions does Grant draw upon in exploring the limitations of language?

Grant engages with a diverse range of philosophical voices, spanning from classical antiquity with Plato through to twentieth-century French philosopher Simone Weil, and even contemporary cultural expressions like the music of Radiohead. This eclectic mix suggests Grant is seeking wisdom about communication and silence across different eras and traditions, creating a cross-cultural and trans-historical conversation about the human struggle to express meaning. The inclusion of both ancient philosophy and modern cultural references indicates Grant's belief that questions about language's failure are timeless and universal.

What does Grant mean by seeking permission to speak, and how does this relate to his academic role?

Grant's references to seeking permission and asking 'Will you allow me?' suggest a fundamental reimagining of how dialogue should occur, particularly in contexts involving Indigenous voices and perspectives. As Vice Chancellor's Chair of Australian-Indigenous Belonging at Charles Sturt University, Grant occupies a unique position to explore how academic and public discourse might be restructured around principles of respect, invitation and consent rather than assertion. This approach challenges conventional Western models of debate and argument, proposing instead a more humble and relational form of communication.
