Resilience lies at the core of understanding the adaptive capacity of people and places in complex social and environmental systems. Resilience theory has made significant contributions to our understanding of how the interacting systems of people and nature - or social-ecological systems - can best be managed to ensure a sustainable and resilient supply of the essential ecosystem services on which humanity depends. Despite this, tourism scholars have been slow to adopt resilience concepts, and the emergence of new frameworks and applications is pressing. Via a transnational lens, Understanding Tourism Resilience: Adapting to Environmental Change draws on original empirical and theoretical insights on how tourism communities and economies respond to environmental change from a resilience perspective. Contributions will highlight the complexity and gradations of environmental change encounters and resilience planning responses in a range of tourism contexts from coastal to mountain, and from urban to remote settings. Cases will emphasize both fast-change (natural disaster and disaster recovery) and slow-change (socio-cultural, economic and ecological) variables, and draw on research from a variety of contexts including Asia, Oceania, Latin America and North America. This timely and significant work will appeal to students and scholars alike working in tourism studies, tourism management, environmental geography, environmental sciences and development studies, among others.
