Western countries have seen a marked 'return to the city' by those seeking to escape the isolation of the suburbs; in eastern and southern countries the population still expects urbanization to improve the quality of life. Accompanying these trends, academic research on the effects of living in cities and on people's response to the city environment has mushroomed. The IAPS 13 (International Association for People Environment Studies) Conference at which the papers published here were presented, attracted policy makers, researchers, teachers and students from all over the world. Interest in the city, in the feelings people have about the city and in their response to it will continue to grow well into the century. There will be more and more disciplinary courses on urbanism in universities and colleges; governments will continue to pay an increasing attention to urban policy and to direct it towards the needs of the people who live and experience them, not just businesses and developers.
