It is January 1793. France is at war with Belgium, Prussia and Austria, and Louis XVI has just been sentenced to death. In Paris, a small group of people fears for the future of a throneless France surrounded by countries terrified that republican ideas - or anarchy - will spread throughout the continent. They are determined to rescue the king, but when their leader is murdered a plan must be pieced together and executed within three days.
Industry Reviews
This is a departure from Perry's enjoyable Victorian crime series. Four days in January concluding with the execution of Louis XVI are minutely examined. While France is in a state of flux and at war with three neighbours, a small group of Royalists plot to free Louis. They fear his death will herald the destruction of their country. The Citizens are becoming disillusioned with continuing hardships under the new regime, Citizen Bernave plans to smuggle Louis out of France using his mercantile network, but he shares his large house with a group who have divided loyalties and diverse backgrounds which could prove dangerous. Among these is Celie Laurent, a young intelligent widow in reduced circumstances who works as a laundrymaid. While living dangerously as Bernave's Royalist go-between, she still has time to wonder if the equality between men will ever extend to her. Angry citizens attack Bernave's house, and in the darkness and confusion Bernave is found dead. The next three days see the household in turmoil with few chances for Celie to reach her contact or realise the details of Bernave's plan. Despair and paranoia are conveyed by detailed repetitions of the mundanities of existence, in depressing bone-chilling weather. Coincidences play a large part in resolving the plot of this novel of the lives of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. (Kirkus UK)
