Since the earliest days of the discipline, psychologists with a variety of theoretical orientations have recognized that interpersonal factors play a role in the origin and maintenance of emotional and behavioral problems as well as in the diagnostic and therapeutic activities through which mental health professionals treat psychological difficulties. Yet, despite recognition that interpersonal processes are relevant to understanding and treating psychological problems, attempts to forge explicit connections between social psychology and clinical psychology evoked little interest among members of either camp for many years. However, over the past two decades, an interface between social and clinical psychology has emerged. Most of these integrations of social and clinical psychology can be found in journal articles that are interspersed throughout the fields. However, because of the diverse locations for dissemination of information at the interface of social and clinical psychology and because fewpeople have access to all of the journals that would provide them with an integrated perspective on the interface, some means of bringing together key articles within the fields of social, clinical, and counseling psychology is needed. This collection of readings at the interface of social and clinical psychology is intended for this purpose. The volume is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate courses in social psychology, personality, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and abnormal psychology, and can be used as a primary text for courses and seminars in social psychology and the social-clinical interface.

White, American Psychological Association
