Using the General Systems Theory (GST) approach, it is possible to focus on "emergent" systemic properties (such as open, adaptive, anticipatory and chaotic systems), by considering their specificity and their lack of reducibility into further components. GST allows description and representation of systemic properties, and the adoption of systemic methodologies. In other words, emergence focuses on the processes of establishing systemic properties. Therefore, research on emergence allows for modeling and simulating processes of emergence, by using the analytical methods of emergence. Analytical examples are the studies of self-organization, collective-behaviors, and artificial life. In sum, emergence analyzes the engine of GST, while GST, itself, focus on the generalized results of this research. Models of emergence relate, for instance, to phase transitions, synergetic effects, dissipative structures, conceptually inducing inter- and trans-disciplinary research. Hence, by nature, emergence is inter- and trans-disciplinary.SYSTEMICS OF EMERGENCE: Research and Development is a volume devoted to exploring the core theoretical and disciplinary research problems of emergent processes from which systems are established. This volume focuses on emergence as the key point of any systemic processes. It deals with this problem with different disciplinary approaches, indicated by the organization in sessions: 1) Applications; 2) Biology and human care; 3) Cognitive Science; 4) Emergence; 5) General Systems; 6) Learning; 7) Management; 8) Social Systems; 9) Systemic Approach and Information Science; 10) Theoretical issues in Systemics.The Editors and contributing authors have offered this work in an effort to help encourage and widen the work in this area of General Systems Research.
