The book presents a comprehensive approach to smart structures, starting from basic concepts, and concluding with a wide spectrum of critical applications. The emphasis is placed on smart structures that employ piezoelectric materials as sensors, actuators, and more importantly, as self-sensing actuators. The book includes seven chapters. The first three chapters cover the basic concepts of structural dynamics, control, piezoelectric actuators, and piezoelectric sensors. The following four chapters cover important applications in active vibration control, passive shunted piezoelectric networks, comprehensive piezoelectric energy harvesting technology, ending with piezoelectric-based periodic and metamaterial structures.Throughout the book attempts have been carried out to develop electrical analogies of the structural/piezoelectric interactions in order to simplify and clarify the coverage. Furthermore, the developed electrical analogues have been treated by using the classical 'Transfer Matrix' approach, as well as LTSpice software.The book is literally covered by many solved examples that outline in a clear manner the application of the presented theoretical coverage. Every chapter ends with several problems, the solutions of which are found in the solution manual.
