Self-knowledge and self-deception are not so much the themes of this book as its primary tools: they are the mirror by means of which questions about the self are studied. As the words self-knowledge and self-deception indicate, the self could be said to be the object here: it is myself I know or deceive. Not being an autobiography, this book however concerns what it is that becomes visible to the one who uses them; its aim is to acquire a better understanding of the question 'who am I?'. The light in which the topic of the book is seen is the light of morality and love, the light in which other people really become visible and so oneself in one's relation to them. In particular the concept of remorse regularly enters the discussions, as the loving way of beginning to bridge the gap between self-deception and self-knowledge.
