Students need to understand the basic theories and concepts underlying resource and environmental management, and be able to apply those to practical situations. By covering basic theories and concepts, and by using case studies to show how these have been applied, Bruce Mitchell's new edition seeks to ensure that students have competence in both aspects. Thematic consideration of change, complexity, uncertainty and conflict leads to an appreciation of their significance and the importance of being able to deal with them. Systematic attention is given to concepts of visioning, ecosystem approach, impact assessment, adaptive environmental management, partnerships and stakeholders, local knowledge systems, gender and development, dispute resolution, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and environmental justice. Case study material is included from developed and developing countries in many world regions, along with guest statements from academics, government public servants, non-government organisations and consultants.
