This could be a book about cheap cheese and bean burritos, slinkster dogs, lanky lizards and rubber chickens ...Or strawberry sundaes with marshmallow toppings, surfing, stage-diving and sleeping on the beach ...It could even be a book about magic. But what it's definitely about is Weetzie Bat, her best friend Dirk and their search across L.A. for the most dangerous angel of all ...true love. The Dangerous Angels series continues with: 2. WITCH BABY (Sep '02), 3. CHEROKEE BAT AND THE GOAT GUYS (Sep '02), 4. MISSING ANGEL JUAN (Nov '02), 5. BABY BE-BOP (Jan '03)
Industry Reviews
First published in 1989 and given a massive thumbs-up by American teenagers, this highly original, exotic and super-cool adventure from Francesca Lia Block is now printed in a new British edition. Here, modern-day Los Angeles collides with a magical world where dreams come true, wishes are granted by a genie, and love eventually conquers all. The story explores the realities of love, as it follows Weetzie Bat and her gay friend Dirk in their search for the perfect partner. It is a journey of discovery for both of them, of love and pain in equal measure, and an element of risk - for, after all, love is a dangerous angel, the most dangerous angel of all. Weetzie Bat herself is an unlikely heroine, with her 'bleach-blonde flat-top' and her 'pink Harlequin sunglasses, strawberry lipstick, earrings dangling charms, and sugar-frosted eyeshadow', not to mention her 'scratchy' voice. This is no statuesque beauty, but a thoroughly modern heroine with whom teenagers will readily identify. Block's style is beautiful and compelling, and the pace so fast the pages seem to fly. Her strange but likeable characters grab the reader's attention as they sprint through a plot that has surprises at every corner. An excellent, moving and unusual novel for young adults. (Kirkus UK)
