In RHAPSODY Elizabeth Haydon tells a story that encompasses a world and centuries of time and which introduces three characters who have already captured a new generation of fantasy fans in the US. They embark on a journey through the centre of their world only to reach its end and find that centuries have passed and the land faces the awaking of a demon. Haydon's world building is unusually well thought out and vivid, her magic system is rigorous, her battle scenes realistic and massively exciting. But it is her characters, the intelligent and resourceful Rhapsody, the enigmatic assassin Achmed and the gruff but dependable Grunthor that have captured the imagination and affection of thousands of readers. This is a trio of characters who will carry the first great fantasy series of the 21st century on their shoulders. This is a harback reissue of Millennium's mass market paperback - a book that will give Haydon's new fans the uniform collection they will be craving.
Industry Reviews
When Meridion uses the Time Editor to edit two moments in time he sets in motion a train of events that sees three people banding together to flee from a common enemy, Michael, the Wind of Death. The companions are, Rhapsody, The Brother and Grunthor - their escape turning into a quest that spans centuries and ranges over all their land - even underground. Rhapsody is a Singer, which means she is able to tune in to and alter the vibrations of both people and objects around her, and she is also a Namer, which gives her the ability to rename anything or anyone. However, she must always tell the truth, with a special responsibility to ensure that folklore is never altered - thus its essence remains intact for eternity. Grunthor is seven feet tall, a giant with scaly skin and claws instead of hands. When necessary, he dispenses death dispassionately with the huge array of weaponry that he carries on his back, though Rhapsody brings out his protective qualities. The Brother wears a cloak and hood, his pockmarked face with its mismatched eyes covered by a veil. He is totally focused on escaping from their enemy and knows exactly where he wants to be, using his extra-sensory powers to lead them to their journey's end. There are some lyrical descriptions of supernatural happenings in this novel and the author's confident style ensures that the events in her story are totally credible as she uses folklore, herbal lore and magic to compose a wholly original fantasy world.
