Himself a Christian, possessed of enormous strength and skill in swordplay, he yet has little hesitation in calling upon the assistance of his Voodoo-practising friend N'Longa when strength, skill and Christian belief are not enough. He became part of the circle of friends of H.P. Lovecraft and a regular contributor to 'Weird Tales' magazine. Apart from his stories in the 'Lovecraftian' vein, he can be considered a major contributor to the 'sword and sorcery' genre, creating such well-known characters as Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja and Solomon Kane.
