The Prospect

What makes The Prospect different from Fleur McDonald's previous novels?

The Prospect marks the beginning of an exciting new series for Fleur McDonald, introducing fresh protagonists Zara Ellison, an investigative reporter, and Jack Higgins, a policeman. Unlike her previous works featuring Detective Dave Burrows, this novel is set in the distinctive gold mining town of Kalgoorlie, offering readers a different landscape and community dynamic. The dual-career perspective of a journalist and police officer working parallel investigations provides a fresh narrative structure for McDonald's trademark rural crime storytelling.

How does Fleur McDonald's personal experience with Western Australia inform this novel?

McDonald currently resides in Esperance, Western Australia, giving her intimate knowledge of the state's unique character and landscapes that feature prominently in The Prospect. Her extensive road trips across Australia to scout storylines and her deep connection to outback communities provide authentic insight into the mining culture and isolated highway settings central to this novel. Living in regional Western Australia allows McDonald to capture the distinctive atmosphere of towns like Kalgoorlie with genuine understanding of their social dynamics and challenges.

Is The Prospect suitable for readers new to Fleur McDonald's work?

Absolutely. As the first book in a new series with entirely new characters, The Prospect serves as an ideal entry point for readers unfamiliar with McDonald's previous novels. You do not need any prior knowledge of her Detective Dave Burrows series or other standalone works to fully enjoy this story. The novel establishes Zara and Jack's backstories and their reasons for relocating to Kalgoorlie, making it completely accessible to first-time readers of McDonald's work.

What research or expertise does Fleur McDonald bring to writing about investigative journalism?

Beyond her two decades of farming experience and intimate knowledge of rural communities, McDonald's commitment to authentic storytelling is evident in her extensive travel throughout Australia to research locations and gather insights. Her founding of DVassist, an organisation supporting regional domestic violence victims, demonstrates her understanding of serious social issues and the importance of investigation and advocacy. This combination of community engagement and dedication to uncovering hidden stories in regional Australia provides a strong foundation for portraying an investigative reporter's perspective.
