A brilliant noir crime novel from the best-selling fantasy novelist Stephen Donaldson
Industry Reviews
Like many a private eye before him, Mick Axbrewder is struggling with alcoholism. So he's not in the best shape to deal with Puerta del Sol's crime lord 'El Senor'. Mick manages to escape with his life, but catches a bullet in the process. Ginny Fistoulari, his lover, helps to get them both out of the city. Their relationship is in trouble, and Mick (without a PI licence) feels that he is obliged to turn for help to the man he hates most: Marshal Viviter, an old college acquaintance of Ginny's and a private investigator much more successful than Mick. Viviter offers Mick work, but the results are more dangerous than anything he has ever encountered before. Donaldson is best known as a fantasy writer, and his Thomas Covenant series has long been regarded as one of the most intelligent and accomplished in the genre. But this novel clearly shows that Donaldson has the measure of the thriller genre quite as assuredly, and this is a dense, beautifully structured piece of writing with a strongly drawn, vulnerable protagonist in Mick Axbrewder. On the strength of this book, there will be a whole new readership eagerly awaiting each new Donaldson crime novel; few contemporary writers are as adroit at handling narratives so rich in corruption, violent criminals and moral ambiguity. A winner, and a reason to celebrate Donaldson's changing literary horses midstream. (Kirkus UK)
