The structure of the book is totally persuasive, with great blocks of narrative forming an epic span that leads inexorably to a terrifying confrontation with satanic forces. It's hardly surprising that the publishers invoke both Michael Crichton and Stephen King, as their influence is palpable. But Long's book is a unique achievement that reads like no other.
