Hospital staff are baffled as baby Solomon turns into a 6 year old by the end of his first day on earth. By the end of the following day, Solomon is a married man. Based on the nursery rhyme, Gooch's character lives his entire life in one week.

This uproarious, slick and cynical first novel owes something to The Tin Drum and something to Eraserhead but most of all it is the product of the author's own sick imagination. Solomon Grundy speeds through his life in accordance with the children's nursery rhyme (born on Monday, christened on Tuesday, married on Wednesday...) while the adults around him display all the attributes of arrested development. A surreal satire on the perils of growing up too fast and of squeezing everything you want into a lifetime. Farcical and tragic in equal measures, it's a great idea executed to comic effect and extremely memorable. (Kirkus UK)
