Her adoptive parents, although supportive, are wary of magic and she is unsure which of her friends she can trust. On the eve of her 17th birthday she intervenes in a fight between her boyfriend Cal and his enemy Hunter. But which of them was in the right? The wrong answer could put them all in great danger, and the only thing Morgan can rely on is her instinct. She's also worried about her younger sister, Mary K, whose boyfriend seems to be over-demanding. This is a thrilling read, full of action and romance, which also poses moral problems, such as how to maintain nature so as to be at one with it and how to decide just what is acceptable force when protecting a loved one. The present-day story is interwoven with an alternative reality rooted in the Gaelic tradition, which is fascinating in itself and becomes more and more relevant to Morgan's life as the story progresses. Morgan is a well-drawn and likeable heroine and Tiernan's sensitive exploration of Wicca culture adds depth to the story. High-quality teenage reading. Ages 12+ (Kirkus UK)
