12-year-old David is a bit of a brute. He lives in a block of flats and is very lonely, like Mr Alverston, another resident, who is afraid that he is losing his mind. Whilst he is hiding in a ventilation shaft spying on his neighbours, David discovers a ghost with a grudge against Mr Alverston.

David is 13 and lives alone with his father in an apartment in an old building. He is not a bad boy but he can never resist a challenge, and this daredevil side leads him into adventure. Above David in the flats lives an old man, Mr Alveston. He is over 90 and is beginning to feel unable to cope alone, but he is very resistant to being moved. The young boy and old man are brought together through a ghostly child who wants someone to play destructive games with. David must resist his pleas, jeers and threats and not join in. The growing friendship between David and Mr Alveston is very touching and it is only through their co-operation that they can help the ghost and finally allow him to rest. This is an excellent novel on many levels, acting as a moral tale and a ghostly mystery and destroying prejudices about age, both young and old. It explores the issues of life and death, of punishment and reparation and deals with the difficulties of growing up in contemporary society. Sensitively written, with believable characters and challenging problems, this is a moving and absorbing tale. Ages 8+ (Kirkus UK)
