A how-to guide to making your own collages, brimful of fascinating hints and tips from a master of the genre.

Over the course of a 40-year career, Jeannie Baker has perfected the art of collage in the creation of picture-book classics such as Where the Forest Meets the Sea and Window, a Boston Globe-Horn Honor Book. Her stunning pieces, devised by assembling all sorts of different textures, are known all around the globe. Whether it's dried flowers or tiny shells, spaghetti or postage stamps, she uses the world around her to make work that is astonishingly beautiful and deeply creative.

In Playing with Collage, she shares her secrets at last – and encourages her readers to get creative. Within each of this book's four main sections, Jeannie presents an abstract collage of her own and offers suggestions and starting points for beginners. There are no right or wrong answers in this treasure of a book, it's all about trusting your instincts ... and playing!

Book Features:

  • Jeannie Baker is the recipient of an International Board for Young People (IBBY) Honour Award and a Friends of the Earth Award. She's also Australia's nominee for the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration.

  • Like Jeannie's other titles, this book has a strong message about connecting with nature.

Jeannie Baker

About the Author

Since 1972, Jeannie Baker has been making her collages, many of which are designed to illustrate picture books, but stand individually as works of art. Her unique collages are created from many rich textures, including earth, knitted wool and feathers, which, combined with more usual artists materials, achieve a wonderful three dimensional illusion. It can take Jeannie up to three years to produce a book. Jeannie was born in England but has lived in Sydney for many years.

Internationally renowned, her work has garnered critical and public acclaim in Australia and abroad and also many awards, a selection of which include, Australian Picture Book of the Year Honour Book, 2005, for "Belonging", Australian Children’s Book Council Picture Book of the Year Award, 1992, for "Window", Notable Book by the American Library Association, 1984, and short listed for the Kate Greenaway Medal, 1985, for "Home in the Sky" and a Boston Globe Horn Book Magazine Honour Book award,1988, and International Board of Young People Honour Book Award, 1990, for "Where the Forest Meets the Sea".

Her latest book, "Mirror" was the winner of the Children’s category at the 2011 Indie Book Awards and also short-listed for NSW Premier's Literary Award. 'Mirror' was joint winner in the 2011 CBCA Book of the Year Awards - Picture Book Category. 'Mirror' has also been short-listed for the Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIA's) for 2011.
