Avast array of natural organic compounds, the products of primary and secondary metabolism, occur in plants. The purpose of this dictionary is to provide basic information, including structural formulae, on the most widely encountered plant constituents, with emphasis on those which are biologically active. The Phytochemical Dictionary covers over 3000 substances from phenolics and alkaloids through carbohydrates and plant glycosides to essential oils and triterpenoids. It also provides an entry into the phytochemical literature on those occasions when more detailed information is required.
Constituents which are listed in the Phytochemical Dictionary include: flavour substances, plant volatiles, insect antifeedants, natural sweeteners, plant poisons, carcinogens, colouring matters, oestrogenic agents, mycotoxins, natural hallucinogens, phytoalexins and allelochemicals. For each substance, information is provided on: trivial name, synonyms, structural type, chemical structure (showing stereochemistry), molecular weight and formula, natural occurrence, biological activity and commercial or other use. Key references to books and review articles are provided for each class and subclass.
