Persuasion

Anne Elliot was nobody with her father or her sisters. She was only Anne. Seven or more years ago she was persuaded to give up her understanding with a young naval officer; for Captain Frederick Wentworth, RN, had risen without trace and therefore could not be approved of by Lady Russell, a quietly manipulative friend of the family. Now aged twenty-seven, Anne experiences only anguish when Wentworth reappears, in company with other officers whom peacetime has washed ashore. After a shocking accident on the Cobb at Lyme Regis, effectively closed for the winter, and an enforced visit to Bath, with its stultifying card-parties and polite nothings, Anne faces a future that will if anything be less certain than the one to which she has resigned herself. All she can be sure of is that it will be very different.
