American Pentecostalism began as a culturally isolated sect intent upon announcing the imminence of the world's end. The sect's early millenarian fervor gradually became muted in favor of flag-waving patriotism. At the end of the twentieth century it has become an affluent, worldwide movement thoroughly entrenched in popular culture.
Edith Blumhofer uses the Assemblies of God, the largest classical Pentecostal denomination in the world, as a lens through which to view the changing nature of Anglo Pentecostalism in the United States. She illustrates how the original mission to proclaim the end resulted in the development of Bible schools, the rise of the charismatic movement, and the popularity of such figures as Aimee Semple McPherson, Charles Fox Parham, and David Du Plessis. Blumhofer also examines the sect's use of radio and television and the creation of a parallel Christian culture
Industry Reviews
"The 20th century may be recorded as the ecumenical century, but it certainly will be noted as the century of the Pentecostal renewal, both as a new church phenomenon and as a charismatic impulse within Catholicism and classical Protestantism... This volume is an important contribution to the study of that development. - Christian Century "Pentecostalism, perhaps the most understudied of American popular religious movements, gets a well-deserved technical treatment with this volume." -- Religious Studies Review "The greatest contribution of this volume lies more in its method than content. The case study approach successfully illustrates the extent to which the prevailing focus on large institutions and prominent leaders has missed so many complex and interesting stories of the way people live once they ... are 'filled with the Holy Ghost.'... This collection not only breaks new ground; it serves as an invitation to join the dig." - The Journal of Southern Religion "A most valuable addition to the literature on American Pentecostal and charismatic movements... [Includes] the best annotated bibliography ever written on Pentecostalism." -- Vinson Synan, American Historical Review "Solid and useful volume." - Cross Currents ADVANCE PRAISE "This outstanding collection makes a vital contribution to understanding a still-neglected area of American Christianity. Readers will gain a clearer picture of the influence of Pentecostal spirituality on mainstream Protestant Christianity and discover why these movements have remained controversial."-Gary McGee, author of This Gospel ... Shall Be Preached: A History and Theology of Assemblies of God Foreign Missions since 1959 "This volume includes penetrating articles by scholars from a variety of disciplines that throw new light on the intriguing diversity of twentieth-century Pentecostalism in America, laying bare both the promise and the problems of this most powerful of twentieth-century American religious movements."-David E. Harrell, author of All Things Are Possible: The Healing and Charismatic Revivals in Modern America "In this outstanding collection of articles by authors from a variety of disciplines, readers gain an accurate picture of how the Pentecostal and charismatic movements have taken their place in the twentieth-century American religious scene." - Fuller Focus "The editors ... succeed in documenting the interaction between Pentecostalism and mainline Protestantism and revealing how those encounters served as a catalyst for shaping and altering American religious identity. Well designed and well written, Pentecostal Currents provides an extensive view of American Pentecostalism over the last century." - Connie Park Rice, The American Religious Experience
