The EVENT publication of the year, the most hotly anticipated thriller of 2018, follows our hero Jack Reacher on a quest into his father's past, and climaxes in the most stomach-clenching, hair-raising, blood-curling, ticking-time-bomb of an adventure yet.
Jack Reacher plans to follow the autumn sun on an epic road trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been - the town where his father was born. He thinks, what’s one extra day? He takes the detour.
At the very same moment, close by, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians are trying to get to New York City to sell a treasure. They're stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. It’s a strange place… but it’s all there is.
The next morning in the city clerk's office, Reacher asks about the old family home. He’s told no one named Reacher ever lived in that town. He knows his father never went back. Now he wonders, was he ever there in the first place?
So begins another nail-biting, adrenaline-fueled adventure for Reacher. The present can be tense, but the past can be worse. That’s for damn sure.
"Absolutely loved Past Tense - Lee Child just gets better and better, which is a very rare quality in a writer of a long-run series. Whip smart, always compelling, always fun, he is dangerously addictive." -- Peter James "Jack Reacher is today's James Bond, a thriller hero we can't get enough of" -- Ken Follett "Sometimes you just want someone who can beat the s*** out of people! I pick up Jack Reacher when I'm in the mood for someone big to solve my problems" -- Patricia Cornwell "One of the sexiest characters in fiction." -- Karin Slaughter "Loved [Past Tense]! Nothing makes for a great weekend quite like quality time with Jack ." -- Lisa Gardner
Although readable, somewhat disappointing in parts.
I liked the sub-plot but not the main story line.
good Book but Expensive
I could have bought this book for less than half price at Big W
Another rip-snorter from Lee Child/Reacher.
Have collected each Reacher story from Lee Child. Never fails to keep me interested to the end.
Roma, Qld. Au.
Absolutely wonderful read. One of those books I never wanted to end. Recommend it for all ages. Those that are Familiar with Jack Reacher books will know what I'm mean. Anyone who isn't I'm sure will be hooked after reading this. Can't wait for the next one.
this author can build tension like no other...!
Another standout novel from Lee Child.Jack is in fine form in this page turner..they are never long enough! The explosive finale is on point and the short story addition helps you get your breath back...
READ THIS BOOK!
Not his best. but enjoyable.Usual basic structure but varying situations.Unusual to see him with ID of some sort!!
Why Australia and New Zealand?
A big fan but finally a book I knew the answer before the end.
However the bonus story was for Australia and New Zealand ... why New Zealand? It's based in Australia. We New Zealanders know where most of the places are that Jack Reacher goes, Australia is nothing special, it's simply close on the map.
Reacher the Killer?
Reacher leaves a lot of bodies behind in this book and I thought the Motel set up was fairly obvious as to it's purpose after a while. Not sure that the cameras here, there and everywhere were totally believable.
Not the best Reacher story Lee Child has written but it was readable. The short story included at the end was okay too.
I have all 23 books.
Make more movies with taller actor playing part.

Lee Child was born in 1954 in Coventry, England, but spent his formative years in the nearby city of Birmingham. By coincidence he won a scholarship to the same high school that JRR Tolkien had attended. He went to law school in Sheffield, England, and after part-time work in the theatre he joined Granada Television in Manchester for what turned out to be an eighteen-year career as a presentation director during British TV's "golden age." During his tenure his company made Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown, Prime Suspect, and Cracker.
But he was fired in 1995 at the age of 40 as a result of corporate restructuring. Always a voracious reader, he decided to see an opportunity where others might have seen a crisis and bought six dollars' worth of paper and pencils and sat down to write a book, Killing Floor, the first in the Jack Reacher series. Killing Floor was an immediate success and launched the series which has grown in sales and impact with every new instalment.
Lee has three homes - an apartment in Manhattan, a country house in the south of France, and whatever air-plane cabin he happens to be in while travelling between the two. In the US he drives a supercharged Jaguar, which was built in Jaguar's Browns Lane plant, thirty yards from the hospital in which he was born.
Lee spends his spare time reading, listening to music, and watching the Yankees, Aston Villa, or Marseilles soccer. He is married with a grown-up daughter. He is tall and slim, despite an appalling diet and a refusal to exercise.
