This research text will present the state-of-the-art theory of open microfluidics, including inertial and viscous regimes, uniform channels and converging/diverging channels, networks, bypasses and valves. Features applicable to closed-channel capillary flows will also be detailed. The applications of open microfluidics are also growing fast, and the book will present and analyse many different applications in the fields of biology, biotechnology, medicine, space, materials science, thermics and oil exploration. The first edition was published in 2019, and the field has progressed quickly in that time. The second edition will detail and complete the theoretical approach for uniform and arbitrary cross-section channels and a new chapter will be added on this topic. New light on the dynamic contact angle will be included and a new chapter on advanced geometries for open microfluidics will be added. Additional applications will be analyzed in detail and made accessible for students not familiar with the subject. Videos and input files for COMSOL and MATLAB software files will also be added.
