'loges' in French can be translated as 'praise', 'accolade', 'commendation', or 'eulogy' and was chosen, in preference to the English word 'elegy' because of its greater range of meanings. An elegy tends to be associated with a peroration given in mourning at the time of someone's death. With '©loges' there is more scope for ambiguity, including an ironic use or use in mocking, and this enables the accomplishment of a range of different timbre or colourations throughout the poem, as well as from poem to poem. The overall tone is of sadness or lament, but this is frequently transmogrified to manifest as a variation which could involve anger or absurdity. There is also a movement of engagement and withdrawal while praise and commendation can be mock heroic or slyly ironic. The ten ©loges are like ten large paintings with common themes.
