Life Span Human Development is about the development of human beings ' from conception to death. It highlights similarities as well as differences in developmental stages, and it asks fundamental questions about why we humans develop as we do.

Each chapter focuses on a particular topic or domain of development ' such as physical growth, cognition, or personality ' and traces developmental trends and influences in that domain from infancy to old age.

About the Authors

Carol K. Sigelman is professor of psychology at George Washington University, where she also was an associate vice president for 13 years and department chair for four years. She previously served on the faculty at Texas Tech University, Eastern Kentucky University (where she won her college's outstanding teacher award) and the University of Arizona. In addition to teaching courses in child, adolescent, adult and life-span development, Dr. Sigelman has published research on the communication skills of individuals with developmental disabilities, the development of stigmatizing reactions to children and adolescents who are different, children's emerging understandings of diseases and psychological disorders, and parent-child communication at a distance in military families. A Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Carleton College and a double-major doctorate in English and psychology from George Peabody College for Teachers, now part of Vanderbilt University. For fun, she enjoys hiking, biking and discovering undiscovered movies.

Linda De George is currently Associate Director Academic in Social Innovation at Central Queensland University. She earned her Psychology Bachelor (Honours) degree and Master in Educational Psychology from the University of Queensland, and her PhD from Griffith University. Throughout her 20-plus year career, she has worked as both a psychology practitioner and university academic with a focus on life span development, educational psychology, developmental disabilities, special education and psychological assessment. Linda's research interests have centred on older adults and their engagement with digital technologies, and also learning and teaching in higher education, where she has published on topics such as blended and mobile learning, first year experience and graduate qualities.

Kimberley Cunial holds a Master’s degree, as well as a specialist endorsement in the field of Educational and Developmental Psychology, and is currently finishing a PhD in Clinical Psychology. She has over 10 years’ experience working in university, school, community, hospital and private practice settings, including working with individuals, groups, couples and families across the life span. Since 2005, Kimberley has worked as an academic, facilitating web-based delivery of a broad range of university courses in the areas of educational and developmental psychology, school guidance counselling, special needs education and psychometric assessment. Her research interests include a particular focus on youth with ADHD, and the implications for outcomes in forensic settings. Kimberley has been published in a number of Queensland regional newspapers for her expertise on a range of issues relevant to child and adolescent psychology. She is also a registered teacher in Queensland, and has seven years’ experience teaching primary school aged children in Australia, England and China.

Mark Kohler's research broadly focuses on cognitive and behavioural development and psychophysiology. He has specific expertise in the areas of child sleep and cognition, sleep disorders, and memory. Mark began his current position in 2018, after working as Senior Lecturer and Program Director for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of South Australia since 2010. Prior to this he completed a post-doctoral research position in Paediatrics at the University of Adelaide.

Nadine Ballam is a Senior Lecturer, Academic Coordinator, and Human Development subject leader in the School of Education at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Her PhD research explored the lived experiences of gifted and talented young people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and this remains a key research area. Alongside this, Nadine’s other research interests include development across the lifespan, risk and resilience, identity and wellbeing. She teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of lifespan development, adult development and ageing, and motivation and talent development in young people.

Elizabeth A. Rider is professor of psychology, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. She previously served on the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She has taught courses on child and life-span development, women and gender issues, applied developmental psychology, and genetic and environmental influences on development. Through a grant from the Pennsylvania State System for Higher Education, Dr. Rider studied factors associated with academic success. She has published research on children's and adults' spatial perception, orientation and ability to find their way, and she is the author of OUR VOICES (John Wiley & Sons), a text on the psychology of women. She earned her undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College and her doctorate from Vanderbilt University. When she is not working, she is busy with home and yard projects and two energetic dogs.
