A. J. Ayer was only twenty-four when he finished this irreverent and electrifying book, yet it shook the foundations of Anglo-American philosophy and made its author notorious.

Elaborating on the doctrines of Russell, Wittgenstein and the Vienna Circle, Ayer argued that factual propositions were only meaningful if they could be verified by direct experience. This enabled him to reject metaphysical claims about god, the absolute and objective values as, literally, nonsense. The statement 'Theft is wrong', he argued, is merely the equivalent of saying 'Down with theft!' Language, Truth and Logic's shocking argument was a direct challenge to moral, philosophical and religious authority. Yet it became a classic text, which not only revitalized British philosophy but set a new standard for philosophical debate.
