It is concerned with practical over theoretical knowledge ('knowing how' over 'knowing that'), looking at the way that theory is applied and skill, judgement and discretion are exercised in the trained practice of professionals.The book contains contributions from experts in a variety of fields including social work, medicine, drug/alcohol work, disability practice, psychotherapy, physiotherapy, nursing and midwifery. The authors give an account of the knowledge that is embodied in their professional practice, paying particular attention to what is distinctive about practical knowledge and the problems to which that knowledge is applied in their field.The book offers a unique perspective on professional practice as multi-disciplinary, illustrating shared and overlapping understandings in knowledge-in-practice between the different professions as well as understandings that are distinctive to each discipline.
