This collection is one of the first to offer feminist perspectives on epistemology from thinkers outside North America. It presents essays from an international group of contributors, including Rosi Braidotti, Gemma Corradi Fiumara, Anna Yeatman, Sabina Lovibond and Liz Stanley. Using approaches and methods from both analytic and continental philosophy, the contributors engage with questions of traditional epistemology and with issues raised by postmodernist critiques.
The essays deal with the central question of difference: the difference which a feminist perspective yields in relation to traditional knowledge and the effects on feminist perspectives of differences between women. This awareness of difference requires a re-evaluation of the idea of objectivity and the justification of knowledge claims in ways that focus attention on the subjects who constitute the knowledge producers. "Knowing the Difference" presents some of the most innovative thinking in feminist epistemology and sets the agenda for the next decade.
Industry Reviews
"These essays challenge, unsettle and stretch philosophic and feminist assumptions, including Anglo-American, Continental and Southern' legacies in both fields. Powerful new voices join widely acclaimed scholars in lively debates and discussions about issues that all of us will have to resolve. What others see as problematic tensions between Enlightenment and postmodernist approaches to knowers, knowing and knowledge, these thinkers turn into valuable resources for the next moment in global dialogues. This is an immensely exciting collection." -Sandra Harding, University of Delaware "This is an exciting collection of papers that will open up the field of work in feminist epistemologies beyond the current terms of debate . . . The anthology as a whole works to bridge the existing gap between the philosophical discussions among postmodernists and among feminist epistemologists." -Linda Alcoff, Syracuse University "These diverse and innovative essays work creatively within the tensions that feminist epistemologies have to negotiate now that issues of accountability, power, specificity, language and agency are as urgent as the once-pivotal questions about disinterested knowledge and truth." -Lorraine Code, York University, Canada
