As the novel opens, we learn that Tom's girlfriend, Anna, is missing. Tom slowly unravels the events which have led to her disappearance. We also learn of his singular obsessions - the reconstruction of a time machine, and his secret work on violent and pornographic software.

Tom is a bright misfit, a nerdy postgraduate scientist with a brilliant mind and no sexual experience. He loses his virginity to psychology student Anna, but his intellectual snobbery and lack of emotional intelligence soon disrupts their relationship. When Anna disappears under mysterious circumstances, almost nothing is left to show she ever existed - except a blurred photographic plate from an antique 19th-century camera. Is Anna really dead? Is Tom to blame - or are time and memory beginning to blur under the influence of the virutal reality programs Tom works on in his spare time? As a black comedy the novel is often brilliant, though nothing can disguise the chilling heartlessness of its anti-hero or the sinister, hallucinogenic London through which he moves. (Kirkus UK)
