Five

What inspired Ilona Bannister to write a novel structured around a five-minute countdown in real time?

Whilst the specific inspiration hasn't been publicly detailed, Bannister's background as an immigration lawyer and her personal experience as an American living in the UK for fifteen years likely informed her interest in exploring how strangers' lives intersect in everyday public spaces. Her fascination with themes of otherness and being on the outside looking in translates powerfully into this high-stakes scenario where five disparate individuals share a brief but fatal moment at a suburban train station. The real-time structure creates an intense pressure cooker that forces readers to confront each character's humanity within an extremely compressed timeframe.

How does Bannister's legal background influence her approach to character development and moral complexity in Five?

Having practised immigration law, Bannister developed a keen understanding of how people's circumstances, histories, and choices intersect with judgment and consequence. This legal training appears to manifest in Five through her refusal to present simple heroes or villains, instead creating characters like the blamed mother Emma and the damaged businessman Liam who exist in morally ambiguous spaces. Her professional experience evaluating cases and understanding multiple perspectives likely contributes to the novel's sharp, analytical narrative voice that challenges readers to examine their own prejudices about each character.

What distinguishes Five from Bannister's debut novel When I Ran Away in terms of style and subject matter?

Whilst When I Ran Away explored family and motherhood through a more traditional narrative structure, Five represents a significant departure with its experimental real-time format and thriller elements. The sophomore novel demonstrates Bannister's evolution as a writer, moving from a character-driven domestic story to a high-concept psychological drama that maintains her signature exploration of parenthood and relationships whilst adding elements of suspense and mortality. The compressed timeframe and multiple perspectives show her growing confidence in manipulating narrative structure to create tension.

How does Bannister's Ukrainian-American heritage inform the themes of otherness explored in Five?

Growing up with parents and grandparents who were Ukrainian immigrants to the United States gave Bannister a generational understanding of displacement, struggle, and the experience of not quite belonging. This inherited sense of being an outsider, combined with her own experience as an American expatriate in Britain, creates a layered perspective on how people perceive and judge strangers. In Five, this manifests through characters who are all, in various ways, isolated or misunderstood, and the novel's examination of how we make snap judgements about people we don't truly know reflects her longstanding interest in migration and alienation.
