About the Author

Ken Follett was only twenty-seven when he wrote the award-winning novel Eye of the Needle, which became an international bestseller and film. He has since written several equally successful novels, including, most recently, Whiteout. He is also author of the non-fiction bestseller On Wings of Eagles. Ken Follett lives with his family in London and Stevenage.

It's May 1944, just before D-Day, and the Jackdaws - a group of six women - are hastily assembled to execute a vital piece of sabotage in the French town of Sainte-Cecile. Led by Flick Clairet, wife of a Resistance hero, they must infiltrate a chateau which contains a telephone exchange vital for German communications and destroy its equipment. The story starts and finishes at a cracking pace. There are of course examinations of motives and emotions, but fundamentally this is an action thriller, and a very good one. It brings alive, as few books do, the incredible bravery of those who volunteered for such deadly work and the ever-present threat of capture and torture, and poses questions about the nature of patriotism and the extent to which violence is justified in its pursuit. What is the difference between cold-bloodedly blowing out a captive's brains in order to save the lives of one's friends and torturing a captive to extract information that will save the lives of one's soldiers? The story depicts a battle of wits between the hunter and the hunted as well as vivid and realistic violence, rivalry and hatred. Well written and genuinely unputdownable, it is most highly recommended. (Kirkus UK)
