Humanimal shows the inextricable interconnections of the human and animal worlds in ways you never before imagined…

So you think you’re special? You think that just because people have built giant cities, invented pop-up toasters and put a person on the Moon that they are somehow different from other living things? Well it’s time to think again! Inside you will discover how slime moulds can solve how to navigate through a maze; how rats tickle and laugh out loud; how elephants have funerals for their lost loved ones; how bees vote in elections to decide where to locate their nests; how crows use cars to crack nuts and a whole lot more!

This oversized, richly illustrated, mesmerising exploration shows that humans and other animals don’t just live on the same planet, they also share many of the same patterns of behaviour, making us all fellow players in the drama that is life on Earth.

Book Features:
  • Uncovers amazing up-to-date research into animal behaviour and the similarities between animals and humans.
  • Written by Christopher Lloyd, author of Blue Peter Award longlisted Absolutely Everything! and the bestselling What on Earth Happened?
  • Packed with information as well as a touch of humour and fun, colourful illustrations by Mark Ruffle.

About the Author

Bestselling author Christopher Lloyd began his career as a journalist with the Sunday Times newspaper. Then, while camping with his family, he had a critical realisation: even with a 1st class degree in history from Cambridge University and experience as a science writer, there was so much about the world he didn’t know. So, he set out to write books that zoom out and tell the big stories, opening readers’ eyes to how seemingly unrelated events fit together and showing them multiple perspectives on the world, all in highly engaging prose and matched with lively illustration and photography.

Now, with several books in print, including the bestselling What on Earth Happened? and Absolutely Everything, Chris divides his time between writing books and delivering lectures and workshops to schools, literary festivals, and a wide range of other venues around the world. He lives in Tonbridge, Kent, UK, with his wife and two adorable terriers.

About the Illustrator

Mark Ruffle studied graphic design and then worked as an art editor for Oxford University Press, before becoming a freelance illustrator and designer. When he’s not drawing animals or spaceships, among other things, he enjoys walking his dogs and cycling in the Cotswolds, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.
Industry Reviews

"These examples and many more give a fascinating insight to the similarities between species and promote sympathy with the animal world - which can only be a good thing for future generations."

* Booktrust *

"This over-sized hardback non-fiction title is presented in a logical and accessible format. Lloyd has split the book into chapters of different characteristics such as community, feelings and intelligence and then provided interesting examples of different species that exhibit similar behaviour to humans. Lloyd also introduces each chapter, asking the reader to think about their own experience while giving examples from his life with two dogs.

The character and appeal of the book is heavily influenced by the design and illustration provided by Mark Ruffle whose artwork is vector graphics based with a muted colour palette. With solid background colours and the blocks of text the book is laid out in an orderly and easy to read design.

This is a superb non-fiction title that is enjoyable to read from cover to cover or simply to dip into for some fascinating facts. An outstanding book with an intriguing title which will entice the most reluctant of readers."
