Editorial cartoonists are buffeted by unprecedented challenges from global computer information networks. Newspapers fall, colleagues are dismissed or harried, and they tussle over "selling" gags rather than satire. Graphic Opinions offers a path-breaking group portrait of their attempts to reconcile economics with a sense of calling.
Through profiles and essays, Graphic Opinions examines current work and opinions of two dozen prominent cartoonists. Between their mid-thirties and late-forties, they have grafted influences from Mad Magazine, Underground Comics, and "counterculture" humor onto earlier innovations of Pat Oliphant and Jeff MacNelly, creating new ways of visualizing political and social issues. Four examples by each cartoonist illustrate this. Almost all are highly distinguished: four recent Pulitzer Prize winners are included. Although hardly complacent about their work, for younger artists compete by disseminating cartoons electronically, they are too settled for comfort with rapid technological change.
