SMU's journey from the infamous 1987 "Death Penalty" to its historic inclusion in the 2024 College Football Playoff is a story of resilience, determination, and transformation. The Mustangs began their slow recovery in the 1990s and early 2000s, focused on compliance and rebuilding their athletic identity. The hiring of June Jones in 2008 marked a turning point, as SMU returned to bowl eligibility for the first time in 25 years with a victory in the 2009 Hawaii Bowl.
