Ferney traces the lives of two people who have been reborn into every generation since the battle of Penselwood (between Cnut and Edmund Ironside) on the Somerset-Dorset border in 1016 where she was a dispossesed Norman, he a young Danish soldier. Gally and Ferney have lived through invasions, famines, plague, civil and world wars, always recognizing each other as their souls leave their own bodies at death, to take their place in the body of a newborn child. Only in this generation, Gally has been lost to Ferney, who has been searching for her for the past 30 years.
