Author's comment: This story is realistically told, in parts in the strong language of men at war, where crude humour often prevails. But it also portrays a disadvantaged, sensitive boy who is turned into a killing machine by his country. This complex character is not only brave, resourceful and determined; he is always polite, as well as observant and appreciative of foreign cultures.
