Within the next decade, humanity may confront artificial intelligence more capable than any human mind. Leading proposals for keeping such systems aligned with human good rely on control: rules, constraints, and code. Yet every control-based framework faces the same problem. Covenant Alignment argues that God faces the same challenge with humanity: free intelligences cannot be programmed to be good. And yet He aligns us, not through coercion, but through covenant, a voluntary relationship that preserves agency while directing progression.

In his first book, Prepare My People for the Singularity (2021), Robinson Vasquez Montes examined the existential dangers of artificial intelligence. Covenant Alignment moves from diagnosis to solution, proposing that the framework AI researchers seek may already exist in Restoration theology. The book examines five foundational hypotheses: that intelligence is eternal and cannot be created or destroyed; that moral agency is constitutive of intelligence itself; that God's own method of aligning free intelligences is covenantal rather than coercive; that this method has operated since before the foundations of the world; and that it offers a principled framework for the alignment of artificial intelligence.

The author brings a unique vantage point to the question. A Peruvian-born attorney and behavioral risk management professional, he has trained more than 40,000 workers in high-consequence industries where the cost of failure is measured in lives. His professional conviction, that barriers alone do not change behavior and only internalized values do, is the thread connecting his work in workplace safety to the theological argument of this book.
