Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker? An epic fantasy adventure, set six hundred years before Sabriel and as rich and compelling as the original Old Kingdom novels.

Clariel is the daughter of one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen, and to the King.

When her family moves to the city of Belisaere, Clariel finds herself at the centre of sorcery and intrigue: a plot is brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan; her parents want to marry her off to a killer; and a dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city.

When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers.

Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage and save the King?

Set approximately six hundred years before the birth of Sabriel, Clariel will delight Old Kingdom fans as well as new readers hungry for epic fantasy adventure.

Industry Reviews

'Beautifully written, magnificently imagined, and wholly original, Clariel is Garth Nix's finest work yet.' - Holly Black, author of The Coldest Girl in Coldtown. 'In this long-awaited prequel, Garth Nix shows us why his Old Kingdom books have influenced a generation of fantasy writers.' - Cassandra Clare, author of the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series.

A must read in the series

I have waited a long time for Garth Nix to expand on the Abhorsen series. I had forgotten most of the series as it was so long ago but once I was into Clariel I remembered all. Thankfully mogget is in the book (the most important character:) and causes his normal strife. I love the Abhorsen series and really loved Clarial.

Great purchase

The book was actually bought as a present

Another Amazing Book from Garth Nix

Amazing! This prequel gives a further insight into the world of the Old Kingdom and also into characters from the other books. It took all but 3 hours to finish as I couldn't put it down.

New adventure into the old yet different

This new adventure in the Old Kingdom will bring you back to the familiar world in Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen but with the fresh twist of being set 600 years prior to those events when things were much different and were beginning to shape the future. With such detail and depth to the story it is such a wonderful read and is well worth the time to read the previous books first as there are so many details about the world to pick up on to immerse yourself further into the world of the Old Kingdom. Yet Clariel doesn't need to be supported by the other books as it is more than capable to stand by itself because in its own way is also a beginning as well with Clariel learning about the nature of how things work in the Old Kingdom.
